I am a Spanish language and music educator with a professional background spanning music performance, education, and community-based cultural work. Throughout these experiences, I have found a point of connection that now defines my work: using music as a pedagogical tool to help children and adolescents engage with Spanish, strengthen their relationship with the language, and build meaningful connections with culture.
Singing, rhythm, and play are an important part of my teaching approach. I use them to support vocabulary acquisition and retention, develop pronunciation and prosody, and encourage greater confidence in oral participation. I am particularly interested in the elements that music and language naturally share: rhythm, repetition, intonation, listening, memory, and sound. Songs, onomatopoeia, rhythmic games, and culturally meaningful repertoire can transform language into an experience that is heard, remembered, spoken, and shared.
My educational practice has been further enriched and strengthened through graduate study. During my Master’s degree in Music Therapy, I explored the relationship between music, language, communication, development, and human interaction, bringing research-based knowledge as well as tools for observation and analysis into a practice I had already begun developing through my experience as a musician and educator.
My academic research allowed me to explore more deeply areas such as heritage language development and maintenance, language rhythm and prosody, collective singing, linguistic insecurity, cultural identity, and sense of belonging. This theoretical and research-based foundation now informs the development of my educational approach, helping me connect musical experiences with intentional, observable, and well-grounded learning goals.
A central part of my work focuses on heritage Spanish and cultural identity. As both an educator and an immigrant mother, I am particularly interested in the relationship younger generations develop with the language spoken within their families. I believe that strengthening this connection involves more than teaching vocabulary or grammar. It means creating opportunities to discover the stories, music, art, literature, traditions, and diversity of Latin American cultures, while helping young people find meaningful connections to their own roots, families, and communities.
This vision has developed especially through two long-term community programs. As Artistic Director of Tradiciones Unidas, I contribute to building a collaborative space where children, families, and community members share Latin American music, dance, and traditions, with particular responsibility for the program’s musical and artistic development. As director of a Spanish-language children’s and youth choir, I use collective singing as a musical learning experience that also creates natural opportunities to listen to, pronounce, and use Spanish within a space of connection and belonging.
My experience also includes Spanish language teaching in the classroom and through private instruction, as well as music and choral education. These different areas of experience continue to shape an educational practice in which music, language, and culture are not treated as separate elements, but as interconnected parts of the learning experience.
My approach integrates music education, Spanish language learning, and cultural identity, drawing on both professional experience and research-informed academic training, with particular interest in the potential of music to support pronunciation, oral participation, vocabulary development, and a sense of belonging.
My purpose is to create spaces where Spanish is not simply a language children and adolescents are expected to learn or preserve, but a language they can sing, speak, share, enjoy, and make part of their own story.
